MARCH 2008

NEWS THAT SKI CLUBS CAN USE!

Please be aware of The United Airlines second bag issue:  United Airlines has announced that, by next ski season, they will allow only one checked bag weighing 50 pounds or less for most passengers and that a $25 service fee will be applied to additional bags.  Obviously, this will mandate a charge of $25 for most skiers flying to a North American resort on United.  If you would like to comment on the new charge and let them know that your club will take this fact into consideration when booking next season’s ski trips, contact Pamela A. Coslet, General Manager for customer relations at 877-228-1327 or customer.relations@united.com.

The National Ski Council Federation's response to United:  In light of United Airlines recent announcement to begin charging $25 for checking a second piece of luggage by non-favored passengers, the National Ski Council Federation NSCF responded to the United bag issue saying that "…the best defense is not to take on United in this situation, but to encourage the other major carriers to not follow United's lead. The Federation has advised their member councils, clubs and individual members to steer their flight plans away from United this spring when they start planning their 2008-09 trips.  They noted that United is waiting until May 5 to actually start charging this service fee, after the traditional ski season. Their schedule also allows time for the other airlines to follow their lead or choose to leave their policies as has been the tradition.   If we can keep the remaining carriers from changing their policies, United may be forced to rescind the new charges in order to remain competitive.  Please join the federation in sending letters of encouragement to the other airlines to not follow United's lead. More information, including sample letters to the airlines and any breaking information can be found at www.skifederation.org
